Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Irish Squad While McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby team selection news

Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has included captain Doris in his Ireland team for the fall internationals, however Joe McCarthy is absent.

The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to face New Zealand in the US on November 1.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in July.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, while number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery after the summer tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new member in the 34-player squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".

After facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again vie for the starting number 10 position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first time in the upcoming URC game at Croke Park.

Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen as the coach deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and played in the second string's defeat by the English in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Ulster lock Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to deputise for Doris if the skipper does not regain fitness in time to play the All Blacks.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on Tuesday.
